XENOPHON CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION OF SPORTS BETTING
Independent Senator for South Australia Nick Xenophon has called for an immediate nation-wide suspension of all betting on sports until a Federal government regulatory framework against match-fixing is established.
Senator Xenophon warns the current state-based regulations are woefully inadequate, and says it is only a matter of time before Australia experiences a major sports betting scandal. The call follows recent allegations of match-fixing and 'tanking' in the NRL and AFL.
"The recent explosion in sports betting, brought about by the internet and the creation of online betting agencies, has meant there has never been more gambling on professional sport," Nick said. "This gambling seriously risks corrupting professional sports."
“Recent scandals internationally have shown that there is an increased risk of match-fixing when gamblers are allowed to bet, not just on who might win, but on who might lose."
“We need tough legal penalties for players, officials, coaches or anyone else involved in any form of match-fixing or manipulation of a game,” Nick said.
"The industry and the states have failed to protect the public and I believe the Federal Government must step in and regulate this industry in the interests of fans and players," Nick said.
Senator Xenophon will outline his plan for tougher regulations, greater investigative powers and harsher penalties during his speech to the Australian and New Zealand Sports Lawyers Association in Canberra this morning.
